In 2019, Little Bean's Toy Chest was honored to become a content partner of the Tai Kwun Center Heritage and Arts (Hong Kong). We were the first creator ever to offer a quiet book workshop based on this famous historical compound.
Tai Kwun - the Former Central Police Station Compound, is a destination of special historical significance of Hong Kong SAR. Built in 1841, it housed three essential governmental bodies under the British colony: the Central Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison.
After many inactive years, the compound was revitalised and renovated to become a historical site and center for the Arts, and opened its door to the public in 2018.
As a Family Workshop program partner, Little Bean's Toy Chest were briefed with a task: to use the quiet book workshop as a medium to tell the history of Tai Kwun and attract family visitors to this destination.
Talking about a prison to pre-school children is not easy. After extensive research into Tai Kwun's historical archives and exhibitions, we designed a whole new book that aimed to showcase Tai Kwun's multi-faceted history, expressed through child-friendly and fun anecdotes.
Take a tour of Tai Kwun below and see how we’ve turned the historical concept to life through our quiet book!
Over 6 workshops, we've told over 40 families about Tai Kwun while introducing them to the art of quiet book making.
